Women in Action

Volunteer WIA

Program Description

WIA is currently looking for volunteers to work in its English-medium nursery school teaching English and mathematics. WIA provides education to approximately 78 orphans and vulnerable children. The school is divided into three classes by age group. There are three permanent Tanzanian teachers as well. Classes are conducted five days a week, from 8 AM to 12 PM. The nursery school is closed during April, August, and December. WIA is looking for volunteers to teach for at least three to six months, but volunteers are welcome to stay up to a year. Guidance will be provided as to what subjects to cover, but volunteer teachers will be expected to prepare their own lessons. The volunteer will most likely need to take public transportation to the nursery school daily. Volunteers may also spend their afternoons assisting WIA in the office or helping to provide other services, if they so choose.

A project coordinator will organize the details of your trip to Arusha, Tanzania. They will meet you at the airport, coordinate a home stay (or help you find your own housing, if you prefer), provide an orientation when you first arrive, and be your point person during your stay here in Arusha. Your project coordinator will also help you arrange side-trips and weekend excursions with reliable travel companies. Swahili lessons can also be arranged for an additional fee.

There is also a Hostel for Volunteers to stay while working at WIA. The fee covers only accommodation but can include breakfast for an extra $14 per week.
